Opening elevations taken:

NW: 31.98 m. A.E.

NE: 32.05 m. A.E.

SW: 32.00 m. A E.

SE: 32.05 m. A.E.

Pick pass done in a 2m by 2m strip along the Eastern wall. Soil is full of roots and small rocks, although not as many as before. Small amounts of terra cotta and pottery present in the picked and sorted soil. Soil change is imminent. The color is turning into a lighter shade of brown and the texture is becoming slightly sandier. The rock grouping on the Northern wall is becoming looser and one rock has already been dislodged. Roots clipped in the Western half while the remaining soil by the Eastern wall is sorted. Pick pass done

in a 2m by 1m strip from the Western wall back. Soil is still full of roots and multiple rocks were hit while conducting the pick pass. No terra cotta or pottery present in the sorted soil. Roots cut in the Eastern portion while the remaining soil is sorted in the Western portion. Pick pass done in the next 2m by 1m strip. Soil is still full of many roots. No terra cotta, pottery or rocks present. New soil is now consistently spread throughout the entire trench. Baulk walling and leveling of the soil will be done so that a new locus may be declared.

Locus 1 Closing Elevations:

NW: 31.92 m. AE.

NE: 31.99 m. A.E.

SW: 31.94 m. A.E.

SE: 31.93 m. A.E.

Opening photos and elevations for Locus 2 were taken.

Locus 2 Opening Elevations:

NW: 31.92 m. A.E.

NE: 31.99 m. A.E.

SW: 31.94 m. A.E.

SE: 31.93 m. A.E.

Before pick pass, the small stump in the Eastern portion of the trench was taken out. The soil in locus 2 is light brown with a softer, sandier texture than locus 1. Some large rocks are visible just below the surface in the SW corner as well as through the middle of the trench running North to South.

PM

Pick pass done in the 2m by 1m strip starting at the Western wall working back. During the pick pass the pick was constantly hitting large, flat rocks that broke off into flat sheets when hit. Many roots still present in the soil,

no pottery or terra cotta present in the sorted soil. Pick pass done in another 2m by 1m strip, working back toward the Eastern wall. No rocks present during this pick pass. Smaller pick pass done 1m by 1m around the rock extending out from the Southern wall. After picking, it seems that the rock stops in the middle of the trench, making it only about one meter long. Soil remains full of small roots, no pottery or terra cotta present in the sorted soil. Final 1m by 1m pick done to the Eastern wall. No rocks present in the soil. No terra cotta or pottery in the sorted soil. 2m by 1m pick pass done starting at the Western wall and moving back. Multiple rocks are present running along the Western edge and seem to stop about one meter in. Soil is still consistent with locus 2 . Multiple roots found in the soil when sorting. No terra cotta or pottery found. Signs of a soil change,

the soil seems to be yellower and flakier. The change is only seen in pockets though so nothing is certain at this time. Pick pass done in a 2m by .5m strip, stopping at the large rock extending from the Southern wall. The strip seems to be free of rocks at the moment as the pick did not hit any during the pass. No terra cotta or pottery present in the sorted soil. One more pick pass was done in a 2m by .5m strip, avoiding the rock extending out from the Southern wall. No terra cotta or pottery present in the sorted soil. Loose dirt was picked up and roots were clipped.

Daily Totals:
