A.M.

A datum point was established on the picchetto in the northwest corner of meter D/73 at a point 20cm. above ground level.  All subsequent depth measurements in meters D-E/71-74 will be taken from this point.

Two aditional cuts were taken in meters D/73-74 and the northern half of meters E/73-74, extending the depth of the trench in these areas to ca. 105-110cm.  The heavy rock concentration encountered yesterday in these meters shows no sign of abating, but instead, increased in density.  In compostition, the small and large rocks surrounded by a grey brown soil.  One cassetta

of tile, consisting primarily of small but well preserved fragments and a few sherds of impasto were discovered amongst the rocks.

A second datum point was also established on the northeast picchetto of meter D/79 at a point 20cm. above the ground level.  This point will be used for measurements in the area of D-E/78-79.  The trench in this area was then extened to the south into meters F/78-79.  Two 10cm. topsoil cuts were then taken in these meters.  The soil was dark brown in color with many roots and small rocks.  One quarter of a cassetta of worn tile was discovered in the cut.

P.M.

Two 10cm. cuts were taken in meters D-E/78-79, extending the depth of the trench in these meters to ca. 55-65cm.  The soil was grey brown in color and contained many rocks and small roots.  One cassetta of tile, including some large and well preserved pan tile fragments, and one half of a box of impasto and coarseware pottery were discovered.

An additional cut was also taken in meters D/73-74 and the northern half of meters E/73-74.  The rock pack remained particularly dense in these meters, rendering excavation difficult.  The soil around the rocks remained grey brown in color.  One half cassetta of worn tile and one half of a box of impasto

and coarseware sherds were recovered from among the rocks.
