AM Cool, Sunny

The morning started off by doing a light cleaning of the trench. After this we outlined the tile packing in pink string, took elevations and took photos of this newly defined Locus 3 . New opening photos of the extended Locus 2 were also taken.

Locus 2 is defined by an olive brown sandy clay with inclusions of small rocks. It is characterized as being the first strata intact after the Locus 1 fill. The more clay like the soil at the bottem of Locus 1 drops out and the modern debris like glass, nails, and porcelain have also seemed to disappear.

Locus 3 is a feature and is defined as the packing of tile terracotta and ceramic in the North East of the trench. Locus 3 seems to be made up of a matrix of similar material as Locus 2 and looks to be an undisturbed collection of material.

After the two loci were photographed and documented, hand picks were used to explore in Locus 2 , in the vicinity of Locus 3 . After not much turned up, work switched to heavy picks and a pick pass was completed to the east of Locus 2 . As this task continued west, pottery, tile, and plaster turned up. Due to the density and hardness of Locus 2 , the pick passes have become difficult and progress has slowed.

A few more tiles and ceramic have been uncovered just to the south of Locus 3 , but due to the nature of the soil it is hard to find them in place. Overall the density is not similar to Locus 3 . As the soil was being cleared a glass bead (Find #1) and a possible forno fragment was found (Find #2)

PM Hot, Sunny

The afternoon was started off with a pick pass just to the west of Locus 3 . The material was sorted into buckets with trowels and hands. Pick Passes continued to the west. As they were being sorted terra cotta and pieces of covertile were found while clearing a pick pass roughly a meter from the west wall, a piece of modern bottle glass and modern tile were found. Locus 2 is defined as a in context strata and not modern fill. These to pieced of modern debris puts this into question. These are the only two modern materials found in Locus 2 . There could we a little remnant of Locus 1 in this area.

Another pick pass was thrown to the North of Locus 3 . The material was sorted by hand into buckets. An additional pick pass was carried out in the east of the trench. This was sorted into buckets. The day was concluded at this task.
