In the western region of the trench, we still have not reached the anticipated olive-yellow soil change as is evident in the rest of the trench. This soil change slopes down rather abruptly. It has also been observed that the 1X1 M area missing the olive soil instead exhibits a brown grey soil that appears not to have the inclusions affiliated with the current locus, additionally, it seems as though the only material being produced is plaster. Just to the west of this lies a cluster of about 10 rocks which continue to lead into the baulk wall along the western edge of the trench.

Due to the peculiarities of the depression in the western region of the trench and the soil change, a new locus will be declared to keep materials associated with this area contained.

Locus 7 opening coordinates and elevations:

  • 93 E / 46.68 S – 26.83 m.AE
  • 45 E / 146.91 S – 26.81 m.AE
  • 89 E / 47.29 S – 26.78 m.AE

Opening photos of Locus 7 were also captured.

Locus 7: a dry, grey/brown soil with few inclusions. Few pebbles about 2cm in size have been recovered.

Work continued, scraping away in the NE2 corner.

The southern lip of the trench was also cleaned up. To begin preparation for end of season photos and a drawing of stratigraphy, the northern baulk wall was cleaned.

While sorting through soil in the NE2 corner, more of the crucible fragment with adhering bronze was discovered.

Special find #94: Crucible fragment with adhering bronze

26.84 m.AE

47.73 S / 170.88 E

Locus 6

Potentially joins with #87

Work began on cleaning the western baulk.

While cleaning the northern baulk, a fossil was discovered at the bottom, in soil affiliated with our locus 6.

Special find #95: Fossil

27.03 m.AE

Locus 6

While working along the southern baulk outside locus 7, a petite, thin bucchero base was discovered, potentially a miniature vessel for offering.

Special find #96: petite bucchero vase

Locus 6

The baulk wall in locus 6 was cleaned up.

While exposing more of the base of the baulk, a piece of a ridged buccheroid handle was discovered.

26.96 m.AE

170.21 E / 46.34 S

Locus 6

While cleaning up the SW3 corner, the area south of the rocks began to slope down into the baulk.

This area of soil still contained the inclusions characteristic of locus 6. Where the soil sloped down in the SW3 corner, a small cluster of rocks was discovered leading into the southern baulk about 10cm  down. There seems to be about 4-5 rocks in this area. It appears as though the rocks north of these are sitting on top of the inclusive soil associated with locus 6. The rocks sloping south in the baulk are unclear as to the soil they are resting on.

Roots were trimmed along the baulk and a trowel and broom were used to remove loose soil from the exposed surface.

While completing a final scrape along the northern baulk, a piece of red-slipped pottery was discovered.

Special find #98: red slipped pottery

26.96 m.AE

169.84 E / 46.33 E

The trench was scraped one more time as preparation for closing photos of locus 6, 7, and T-92 as well as aerial shots to demonstrate the relationship between tT-91, T-92, and T-93.

A stratigraphic drawing was recorded along the northern baulk of T-92.

Closing photos and elevations were taken.
