Description

An impasto crucible fragment with a finished rim.  The interior of the vessel is heavily warped and bubbly from burning, showing signs of vitrification, scarring from slag, and one small bronze flake near the transverse ancient break.  The exterior is finished and preserves a partial fenestration, max. pres. diameter 0.022 m.  The fenestration begins 0.031 m below the rim and is ringed by a projecting lip which is partially preserved and partially broken in antiquity, revealing the attachment scar from its creation.  The interior of the fenestration is finished roughly perpendicular to the rim for a max. pres. length of 0.026 m before a separate almost perpendicular projection 0.007 m in height causes it to narrow.  This fenestration likely represents the point at which the tip of a bellows could be inserted to control air to the crucible during the metal working process.

Reconstructed from two fragments, Find 15 and Find 16.  Information on this form taken from Find 15.  Find 16 was recovered on 20/7/18, also in Locus 5, E173.1/S47.0, at 27.31m A.E. and is recorded on pg. 71 of EC XII.
