Definition | Wall. |
Description | A wall of irregularly-cut, small, sandstone blocks with considerable amounts of mortar found between them and in the surrounding soil. From Trench 25, it was expected that the wall that formed the eastern perimeter of the Lower Temenos would continue to support the third stylobate and appear to the east of it. However, while the stylobate was found along the entire length of the trench, with the exception of occasional robbed pavers, the wall appeared only in the southern part of the trench. An initial exploration was made for the wall in the northeast corner of the trench but was unsuccessful. It is possible either that the wall is missing from this area, or that it is a depressed area of the wall, such as was found in Trench 25, Locus 7 (the lower area in that trench was interpreted as a stairway to the lower market). However, the exploration was taken down 1.058 m below the datum point on the top of the column drum without finding the wall (Daily Field Form 28047), and the presence of the Locus 6 soil makes it unlikely that the wall is there at a lower level. Where it is present, it is significantly different from the wall in Trench 25. In Trench 25, the wall extends approximately 1.3 m to the east of the stylobate and is not found on the west side of the stylobate. In Trench 28, the wall extends to the east and is found on both sides of the stylobate, as if the stylobate started on the west side of the wall and slowly drifted to the middle of the wall (Daily Field Form 28042). Furthermore, the wall as found in Trench 28 is significantly narrower than in Trench 25, compared to 2.37 m. It will be possible to determine more about Wall 8 once the earth to the west of Trench 28 is removed. For this and other reasons, Trench 36 has been opened to clear the area between the second and third stylobates in the southeast area of the Lower Temenos. |
