General remarks Rocks, extending 50 cm beneath the soil, were exposed on the surface. This layer sealed the fill and plowzone in loci 1 and 2, naturally acting as a retaining wall, causing larger despostion to the north. It is composed of large pottery, mortar stones and rocks with pebbles. Below the rock layer there is a fill similar to that in loci 1 and 2. By the end of locus 4, several stones and mortars of a similar appearance emerged along the northwestern baulk at the same elevation, and this is potentially a continuation of the stone feature.

Has note Contexts excavated in trenches were recorded using the "locus system." A locus is any discrete three-dimensional entity excavated in a trench. The key to the locus system is the recognition that a locus is any one thing. Differences in soil composition or texture are therefore as important as, for example, the difference between a pit and a wall. If two entities were distinct, they were considered separate loci and were therefore assigned separate locus numbers. It should also be noted that every context excavated in a trench was given a locus number and thus the trench itself is made up completely of excavated loci.
