Trench | ca95_2023 |
Year | 2023 |
Description |
In comparison with the overlying locus (Locus 1), Locus 2 is lighter colored, denser and somewhat more compact and less organic soil deposit underlying Locus 1 in the southern half of the trench. We did not determine the depth of Locus 2 as we closed the trench after removing about 5 centimeters of soil from the uppermost layer of this locus. Locus 2 contained numerous rough cobbles and pebbles of various size, and several large and a few roots, but generally contained fewer organic materials than Locus 1. The thin scatter of artifacts within this locus included 7 heavily eroded terracotta tile fragments and 2 impasto ceramic pottery sherds. The sterility of the soil within this locus seems to increase with depth, justifying our decision to close the trench. |
