Description
  • If these were stairs, the paving stones were removed from them. This probably occurred during this stage.
  • Locus 7 is an area of possible steps leading down from Wall 3 to the east, towards the 'Lower Market' area. It is constructed of irregularly-cut, sandstone, ashlar blocks similar to Wall 3. Two steps were exposed. The steps are located to the south. Only the bedding to the steps remains; the paving having been robbed. The steps drop 0.38 m from Wall 3 north from the stylobate. The bedding of the first step is 0.28 m below the level of the wall. The following step, the last exposed, is 0.69 m below the level of the wall. They appear to have been stairs. If the paving stones were present, they would have been comfortably spaced steps. It is also logical that there be a staircase leading from the Temple to the 'Lower Market' area. Further excavation would be necessary to determine if these are indeed stairs. Locus 7 was identified and discussed in Daily Field Form Sequence Number 25031.
