Field Description | Dense silty clay with much microfauna, and locally cemented with calcite (likely undergoing decalcification). Also appears to be basically phosphatised with apatite in vughs. Some terra rossa balls. Overall, looks like relatively fresh terra rossa that was calcite-cemented and now phosphatized. If so, implies that the phosphate was not really associated to a former surface but through subsurface water. Look for some ashes and charcoal in thin section because could be trampled hearth material. Some manganese? Good sample to show what sediment was like before travertine. Fresher than equivalent sediments to N on other side of K19. |
