Description Locus 8 represents the collapse of the arches and vault covering the Corridor/Room. This locus contained many architectural fragments that could be directly associated with the vault, i.e., voussoirs and the large, flat sandstone cover slabs which rested upon them. The strategy adopted during the excavation of this locus was to remove the soil accumulation while leaving these masonry elements in place. Thanks to this technique, a number of fallen arches which lined up almost exactly with their respective niches were discovered. In addition, information concerning the vault’s method of construction was also gathered (see Discussion for a full treatment of these two topics). Although it was difficult to determine exactly, the soil (Munsell 7.5YR 4/6, Strong Brown) in which these masonry elements were found probably washed in soon after the vault had collapsed, filling in the spaces that were left between the blocks after they had fallen. The soil, therefore, probably represents the first layer of accumulation following the destruction of the vault over the Corridor/Room. A substantial amount of painted plaster was found underneath the collapse close to the floor level, and especially near the bench, which probably indicates that this material was used extensively in the Corridor/Room and was not simply washed in after the vault’s destruction.
