Description | This locus consists of two steps running along the north front of the Temple Podium. These steps continue 1.25 m west, beyond the northwest corner of the Temple, and may have originally ringed the entire building. Each step consists of two layers of large limestone ashlars. The top layer slabs appear to have been mostly robbed away. The lower slabs, ranging anywhere from 0.40 m to 1.30 m in length and averaging 0.43 m in depth and 0.20 m in thickness, had what appeared to be a mix of mortar and leveling stones on their surface; apparently this served to hold the (now missing) top slabs in place. N.B. the later Locus 18 steps to the west appear to be composed of these robbed out upper slabs. |
