Description Following notes by HB on 01-Aug-05. Handpicked from top of burnt rubble in space 252. Small unit, 2 burnt, 1 heavily calcined. Rest is incidental. The previous comments were as of Aug 05. The rest of the unit was recorded 2008 by SAF. The flotation sample was available and the >4mm was fully analysed along with the dry-sieved. The unit is heavily dominated by cranial elements, particularly mandibles. The entire unit is burnt, ranging from heavily burnt to calcined. The burning appears to have been in situ and does not correlate with species or element. Given the heavy burning, other surface features are hard to distinguish but there does not seem to be polishing or trampling. Edges are sharp and there is no abrasion. The scrap is evenly divided between cranial and long bone shaft fragments with a very small number of 03 ribs and one 03 vert. There are only 2 scrap fragments over 5 cm, with most being 2-4 cm. Most of the post cranial scrap is sheep-goat size, while much of the cranial material is 05 size. Identifiable bones include several large fragments of pig mandible which were larger, perhaps almost complete tooth rows, in the ground. Most do not have complete P3/4 alveoli so the DZ is one, but there are at least three and possibly more individuals. There is one loose pig canine that is definitely male. Some of these pieces may have traces of plaster, although the calcination makes makes it difficult to be sure of this in most cases. Most of the teeth are missing although there are some burnt tooth fragments from both pig and sheep-goat. Identifiable post crainal bones include an equid humerus, a cattle phalanx and a few sheep-goat bits. Overall the material look like an unusual concentration of mandibles, in a fill background. The flotation sample is dense. Like the dry sieve it is completely burnt although with less calcination than in the dry sieve. There are a small number of digested fragments. Sheep size long bone fragments of 2 cm or less dominate the assemblage with many fewer cranial frags than in the dry sieve. There are several large fragments of pig mandible as well as some sheep goat mandible and feet. There is also a fox calcaneus and a number of fox size fragments that cannot be identified to species. Like the dry sieve the material seems to be fill but with the addition of pig mandibles that were probably quite substantial, perhaps whole when they were placed in the deposit.
