| Description |
This SU corresponds to the mortar floor that is 1.5-3 cm thick, which runs from wall 5704_f1 to 5717_f1. We have preserved a sample of the mortar floor for compositional analysis. This layer includes ceramic inclusions. Alex L, who is digging this layer, has noted occasional flecks of charcoal. The floor runs up to and abuts the wall (5704_f2) but does not run underneath it. However, if this wall had mudbrick facing as we suspect it did, then the mudbrick would have sat on the mortar flooring as illustrated to the left. The floor also runs up to 5717_f1, but here the wall is more poorly preserved which makes it difficult to determine relationship to floor. As we dig down, we may be able to define wall better. At 3:30 pm, we have fully removed the mortar floor, and exposed the subfloor fill beneath which we will excavate as SU 5722. We have not yet removed the large slab but have left it in to give a sense of where the floor lay. We will not remove it at all. Top Elevations: N 54.94, C 54.98, S 54.93 Bottom Elevations N 54.86, C 54.86, S 54.86 Addendum 20/06/09: We left the stone slab in situ when trench was back filled. We sieved 1/3 of all dirt in this SU through fine mesh because the soil seemed soft ashy. |
