Description | This East Wall 1.2 m in width, emerged in Locus 1, extends on a north-south axis on the east side of the trench and is the exterior Temple Wall on the east side. This trench finishes the west side of the East Anta door and reveals the northern section of the East Exterior Temple Wall. The structure is built of coursed ashlars with Nabataean diagonal dressing. The purpose of this dressing is to assist in holding the plaster Locus 7, that covered the use of irregularly cut, multicolored sandstone ashlars. There are two main courses of stone with a smaller interior stabilizing course in the East Wall's construction. The irregular height in the top of the East Wall shows the effect of the earthquake damage to the Temple structure. The weakest point excavated thus far is the doorway Locus 5. From the inermittent exposure on the surface, this East Wall should extend to the southeast corner of the building when completely excavated. The East Wall continued to be revealed until the exterior corridor bedding pavers Locus 9 were exposed. The East Wall and the East Corridor are part of the later expansion. To date 9 m of the east exterior of this East Wall now stands from the 1997 excavations. |
