Description | This floor bedding, covering the entire exposed area of the Pronaos, is composed of very irregularly-hewn, sandstone slabs (ranging in size from approximately 0.60 m-x-0.60 m to 0.10 m-x-0.10 m), hard-packed, sandy, mud mortar (Munsell 7.5YR 4/3) and occasional patches of finer white mortar. Its surface elevation is slightly uneven, ranging from 885.67 m to 885.83 m, with a general tip downwards to the north. It is more regularly laid along the line between the Patricia Anta and Vartan column, directly in line with, and built-up to, the supporting blocks of these features. Because it is built-up to these supporting blocks and also to the Stylobate in the north, it may be that this sub-flooring is not original to the Temple's construction stage further excavation around the Anta and Pronaos columns or partial removal of this bedding might clarify this issue. Within the bedding in the northeast area of the Pronaos we uncovered three suspicious-looking, sandstone blocks laid in a slightly oblique north-south line. They resemble the canalization capstones uncovered in SP 4, 1994, although up here in the Pronaos they are obviously at a much higher elevation. They also seem to be too far west to be on line with the south tunnel of the main canalization system. Perhaps lifting one or two of these stones in the future would be of some use. During the course of the excavation this season, small sink-holes (one slightly over 1 m in depth) appeared and then disappeared with the overpasses of the earth-removing equipment. There was also a sink-hole uncovered in the clearing of the floor bedding in Trench 12, 1994, which appears to be situated over a secondary drainage system this too may be a profitable area to investigate. |
