Condition | Preserves rim fragment of vase with attached head, except for its left eye, the left side of its upper lip, and the tip of the chin. |
Description | The vase fragment preserved has a hole 0.027 m high by 0.033 m wide below the rim. Above this hole, the rim is thickened to 0.024 m. On both sides of the thickened area the rim curves slightly upwards. On the outside surface a hollow head is attached, so that the vase could have been carried by grasping the thicknened rim through the head and the hole in the vase. The head has long hair falling down free of the head in a triangular mass on either side. The surface of the hair across the top of the head is divided into vertical ridges. Behind the ears two of the segments on each side become long strands which curve around the ears and fall straight down. Below the ears, the hair on each side is divided into horizontal segments. The forehead and the square chin are receding. The broad cheeks are prominent. The mouth area is recessed slightly into the face. The lips protrude. The almond eyes bulge out below the ridges of the brows. The nose is short and was probably triangular. The ears are set far back on the face, They have a ridged outer edge and a depression to indicate the interior. There are irregularities on the chin which may be the remains of a beard. The inside surface of the hollow head is irregular. |
Fabric Description | Coarse clay with bits of stone, fired bright orange on the outside surface of the vase, orange-brown on the inside, the lower part of the face blackened |
