Description

Locus 49 was an olive-brown soil deposit situated in the northwestern quadrant of the trench. It was irregularly shaped, as the presence of the deposit within the trench resulted from the excavation of disparate trenches in the area of EPOC4’s front porch, prior to the opening of T90 in 2017. The deposit consisted of two projecting elements of soil, running south from EPOC4’s northern foundation wall, and a package of soil situated to the north of these two projecting elements.

The soil of Locus 49 was olive-brown in color, claylike in texture, and was loosely compacted. The upper surface of the deposit was heavily encrusted, after multiple years of sun-exposure; however, once the top five centimeters were removed, soil was loose. Soil was excavated using hand picks and trowels and soil was hand-sorted in the trench, but was not sieved.

Small quantities of material culture were recovered from Locus 49; 43 fragments of tile and plaster, 91 pottery sherds, 24 bone fragments, and one fragment of slag were recovered from the locus. One example of pottery found in Locus 49, PC20230077 (Find #77), a fine impasto knob handle fragment, likely dates to the late 8 th or first half of the 7 th century BCE. However, this deposit was positioned stratigraphically above deposits associated both with EPOC4 and the small, rectilinear hut built over the front porch, suggesting that this is not a primary deposition. Instead, the soil deposit of Locus 49 likely resulted from erosion.
