Description | This 0.80 m-x-0.50 m sondage was excavated through the southeast corner of Locus 24 in order to determine whether this might be a floor surface marking the bottom of Loci 3 and 7. This was not found to be true, but the results of the sondage suggest a plausible explanation. In Locus 25, the bottom of Locus 7 was found to have been constructed onto a layer of rubble. This rubble seems to have been laid out roughly along the dimensions of the wall, and those stones not completely covered by the wall were found protruding from under it (AF17/056). The soil levels appear to have been created during the construction of the wall. Each level within the sondage is an ingredient for the mud-mortar used in Locus 7. Most likely, the levels spilled or were laid down and then packed by the feet of the men making the wall. Not only did the sondage reveal the end of Locus 7, it also revealed the top of the next course of Locus 3; therefore, the depth of this wall is still unknown. |
