Description Locus 12 represents the rubble and soil level under the immediate leveling for Locus 3 (the third step). It was initially inclusive of Loci 13 and 14, however, after further excavation they were created as their own loci. It has a Munsell Color of 7.5YR 4/4, and is composed of fine, compacted soil, which contained small stones as well as small mortar fragments, probably from the steps themselves. This represents the soil level that followed the wadi mud leveling for the third step, before the rubble fill. Nabataean pottery fragments from this level corresponded to Schmid’s chronology of Nabataean 2c-3a, or approximately 0 CE – 50 CE.
Location In the footprint of the third step (Locus 3).
Overlies Loci 13, 14, 15, 16, 17.
Bottom (m) Closing Elevation: T – 0.79 m.
Underlies Loci 3, 9.
Top (m) Opening Elevation: T – 0.58 m.
