Relations Associated with: The south face of Locus 3.
Description Area to the north of the Stylobate. Fill-debris is tipped slightly from south-to-north. It contains Munsell 7.5YR 5/6, strong brown, fine, loose sand and large stones. The soil color varied to 7.5YR 6/3. This locus consisted of a total of 65 worked, ashlar architectural fragments (maybe five of which were identified as column drums). Only two pottery containers were recovered, as well as one stone, shell and glass container each. The fragments recovered in the northern part of the locus had fallen around the Porch column drums (from the Artie Column), indicating that the column had collapsed first. From this locus, a complete, ashlar block with a Mason's mark was discovered. The mark was a Nabataean Alpha, used most prominently in the first to second centuries CE (dated by S. Farajat and S. Tell). Also found was a partially-intact socle, with three complete, socle holes, and half of another three where the block had evidently broken. Both of these fragments were removed to the lapidary. Still in place is P/ST 478; on the northern face of this carved, ashlar block is one socle hole almost identical to those on P/ST 598's fragment. It was not removed because of its weight and size; it also would have destroyed the west balk of Trench 3.
Definition Stylobate north.
