Object Type (notes) Bowl, Fragment
Size Max. Pres. Height 0.070 m, Estimated Max. Diameter of Bowl 0.230 m, Thickness (Where Not Decorated) Approx. 0.065 m.
Condition Worn; mended; surface cracked in some places. A yellowish brown mud incrustation remains after cleaning.
Description The interior wall of the bowl curves smoothly up; then turns out at an angle slightly greater than 90 degrees to form a thickened rim almost square in section. On the exterior, this rim is shaped by two grooves into three ridges. Between these and two similar ridges at the bottom of the fragment, the side of the bowl has plastic decorations: the major feature is a female frontal head. On a roughly oval lump of clay approximately 0.027 m long, eyes with eyebrows, nostrils and mouth seem to be molded. Incised lines indicate a headdress with vertical lines between its curved top and band on the brow; straight hair falling from this on either side of the face; and the four decorative loops of a necklace under the chin. A slightly raised area to the left of the head is separated by a groove from the upper part of a loop.
Fabric Description Bucchero. Very fine grained with very tiny white bits of stone. A black layer below the surface surrounds a dark gray core.
