Description	Locus 1 is a deposit that extended across the entirety of the trench, measuring 2x3 meters. It sloped downward gently from north to south. It consisted of a dark grayish-brown, silty clay loam that was mildly compacted. It contained high quantities of small rocks, measuring 5-10cm on average, had five large stumps scattered across the trench, along with a number of tree roots, and contained scattered charcoal fragments. Locus 1 contained low quantities of material culture, consisting just of abraided terracotta roofing tiles and limited quantities of bone. Locus 1 was approximately 20cm deep and overlaid bedrock outcroppings and larger stones. Locus 1 was excavated using a pick axe, with soil shoveled into buckets and sorted over the wheelbarrow. Towards the bottom of the locus, soil was handpicked and troweled and hand-sorted in the trench. Based on the characteristics of the soil and of the material culture, Locus 1 is topsoil.
