Description | For the most part, this wall is composed of reused well-dressed ashlars unevenly set in two rows. It is 14 courses in height in the south, six courses in the north, eight courses in the east, and six courses in the west. Its height on the south is 3.25 m; on the east it is 2.30 m in height and on the north 1.50 m in height-by-0.84 m in width. On the north it is six-seven courses in height and two rows in width. It is composed of curved stretchers interspersed with a few headers. Backing this wall on the north is the Locus 22 apsidal wall of N Rooms Chamber 4 that curves to the north. The north wall of the chamber 4 bricked in alcove, Locus 14, extends to the northwest curve of the north wall where it is tucked below the floor level. There is also a vault on the north wall measuring 0.77 m in width-by-0.77 m in height composed of nine well-dressed vault ashlars. Further to the east of the vault is a doorway measuring 0.90 m in width leading to a small room which has been blocked off and is part of the south entrance to the Locus 17 service passageway. Its north doorway is on a northeast-by-southwest angle and it originally measured 0.86 m. Later the doorway was closed off and the room walls were plastered; plaster still adheres to some of the ashlars. The east side has used the West Precinct Wall for support with the result that its condition is significantly more stable. However, some of the ashlars are braking away from the Nabataean parent West Precinct Wall against which they rest. To the west is a doorway, perhaps the main access into the room from the caldaria chambers. There are also doorways on the south and on the north Locus 4 into the service passageway Locus 17. There is also a niche, Locus 12, which seems at one time to have been the main focus of the room. In the north wall there is a vault, Locus 13, which connects with Locus 16, the small rectangular room, Chamber 5 in the N Rooms. This vault may have served as an exhaust outlet for both rooms. (Also see Locus 30, the sondage in the Locus 5 room.) The bath system seems to have been planned as a single unit and it appears that it is on the same axis of orientation as the Great Temple, northwest to southeast. This locus along with others of the bath complex appears to be self-contained elements in an overall design that physically distinguish different areas of the baths. (Please see comment infra, Locus 10.) |
