Description This is the continuation of the bedrock escarpment excavated by Martha Sharp Joukowsky in Trench 77 in the 2000 season in the east and found again in the west in the 2001 season in Trench 83. Used as a natural protection from potential fallout from the hillside, the bedrock was scaled back during the construction of the temple and its surrounding plazas. This bedrock escarpment is now known to contain several caves, including Cave 1 and Cave 2. It extends further to the west and probably contains quite a few more caves with associated architecture.
