Description | The head preserves the right side of the face, with the ear, eye, and part of the nose and mouth; the left side of the face, the top of the head, much of the nose, and the chin are missing. The head is slightly larger than life-size. The right eye is oval, and modelled in high relief; the eyebrow ridge, starting beyond the eye, continues to form the line of the nose in one broad, even curve; there is a trace of the right nostril. The lips, which are slightly parted, are crudely modelled, and there is a definite depression at each side of the mouth. The right side of the jaw curves sharply under, and the neck projects below it. At the top of the head, the whole surface flares out slightly, just below the break. The ear is simply modelled with a ridge of clay defining its outline and suggesting its two major parts; inner detail is lacking. The back of the head curves in from right to left and the unbroken surface is rough and uneven. The piece appears to be constructed in two layers: a heavy cylindrical core of clay, with the modelled surface applied. See also ears, 19670009, 19670421, and 19670422. |
Fabric Description | Coarse clay with bits of stone and mica fired to an orange-brown. |
