Description Locus 3 consists of a compacted yellowish soil that is slightly lighter in color than the soil of Locus 2. It is characterized by a moderate amount of small tree and bush roots, fractured cobble-sized stones (more than 5%), highly eroded tiles (more than 2%), and pottery sherds. Locus 3 covers the northwestern corner of the trench from 80S 192E to ca. 80.75S 192E and from 80.47S 193.40E to ca. 81S 193.40E. It varies in thickness with the greatest accumulation along its western edge. It is beneath Locus 2 and above Locus 5. The primary distinction between Locus 3 and Locus 2 is the greater concentration of stone inclusions in the former. The primary distinctions between Locus 3 and Locus 5 are the larger stone inclusions and browner, fine grained soil of the latter. STRATIGRAPHIC CORRELATIONS WITH SURROUNDING TRENCHES: Locus 3 seems to be part of the rock pack which Theodora B. Kopestonsky identifies as Locus 3 in T28 North (2001) (see TBK II T28N 2001, p. 131). FINDS: A) orange ware - 4 sherds (undiagnostic), 1 sherd with a grooved moulding on the exterior surface; B) impasto ware - 23 sherds (undiagnostic), 2 rim sherds; C) bucchero ware - 2 sherds (undiagnostic); D) unworked bone - 4 pieces; D) bulk terracotta tile fragments - 3/4 bucket (26cm. x 9cm.) of pieces 1cm. to 11cm. in diameter.
