Stage Description | Main construction of the Bath Complex. |
Description | This room wall serves as a socle for the superstructure of the S Rooms Chambers 1 and 2. It is sturdy and uneven, patchy on its lower courses, but its upper hewn sandstone courses were secured with wet mortar. These walls had their surfaces covered with a decorative smooth plaster and its snecking stones were covered as well. The number of courses are not easily assessed because of the vast amounts of mortar and plaster covering the surface, however, the number of rows are two with a mud mortar filling sandwiched in between the facing walls. The bath system seems to have been planned as a single unit and it appears that it is on the same axis of orientation as the Great Temple, northwest to southeast. This locus along with others of the bath complex appears to be self-contained elements in an overall design that physically distinguish different areas of the baths. |
