Description Rubble-built foundation wall, of sandstone chunks and wadi cobbles mortared together, oriented north south and lying underneath the string course Locus 25. Although the later cross-wall Locus 13 was erected on top of these features, the excavator interprets the suite as being an original Nabataean feature, running between the Middle Cryptoporticus Wall and the Portico Wall, and functioning as a retaining feature for the floor bedding of the cryptoportici that met at this junction. The height of the feature — only 0.74 m — and its construction technique suggests it was not a suitable foundation for a wall that would have been between perhaps 3 m and 4 m tall, and over 1 m wide. Thus, the later builders of the cross-walls “opportunistically” built Locus 13 over this feature, but it was originally part of the Temple site Phase IV.
