Description | Locus 3 spanned the entirety of the northern extension of the trench. Soil was medium brown colored and was loose in texture. There were also patches of paler soil in some locations, as well as some pockets of darker brown soil. The opening surface of Locus 3 was significantly higher in the center of the extension, with a mound that reached approximately 30cm above ground level. Locus 3 contained many roots as well as rocks of various sizes, some quite large. There also were some fragments of chalky limestone, as well as some pockets of carbon. Locus 3 contained high quantities of roofing tile, including some large, well-preserved fragments. Moderately high quantities of pottery and bone were found as well. Some of the tile found within this locus was modern, although most materials found were ancient. A fragment of gorgon hair, as well as a cavetto fragment, were found in this locus, both of which date to the 6th century occupational phase. However, a medieval handle sherd, likely dating to the 12th century CE, was found as well. The chronological jumbling of materials, coupled with inconsistent soil types and an apparent artificial rise in the center of the extension all indicate that this was the remains of a dirt dump created in earlier years of excavation. Locus 3 is equivalent to Locus 1. |
