Description | Fragment preserves top edge of decorative protome-like attachment from some heavy vessel, such as a focolare - has rounded, broken semicircular top, smooth, convex back surface, and slightly convex front surface with relief decoration of gorgon head. Head has round, raised curls over triangular forehead, which has one curved V-shaped groove in middle of forehead; eyes are bulging almond-shapes outlined with grooves - eyes are asymmetrical and not exactly similar; nose is triangular and rounded, with nostrils slightly outlined and with three horizontal grooves to indicate wrinkles, deep semicircular depression below nose indicates top of mouth, with just beneath it, a small horizontal ridge with approximately four short vertical ridges set below it to indicate teeth. Left side preserves raised vertical area, possibly a fang, right side has raised rounded ridge set off by grooves and is apparently the corner of the mouth, and part of a fang, rest of mouth and chin not preserved. |
