| Description | Excellent workmanshiip with incised detail. A human figure holding wings below a bird which flanks a lotus and palmette. The human figure, like the bird, is in high relief. The face is almost rectangular with details incised on the surface. Vertical striations mark the hair which falls straight across the narrow forehead. The almond shaped eyes are set off from the forehead and cheeks by a slight undercutting. The eyebrows are thick and curve to follow the shape of the eyes. The flat nose is almost completely worn away. the mouth is a horizontal band formed by an incised line above and below the band. The chin is thick. The figure stands holding a wing in each hand which is shaped in a fist. The arms are bent upward at the elbow and cross the chest. Two incised lines, just above each elbow, mark the end of the garment which falls straight down, at the waist, in folds indicated by three vertically incised lines. The wings, which the figure holds, curve around the head and end in a volute. They are in high relief, further emphasized by a single incised line in the center and one at the outside edge of the wing. In the upper left is a bird with a rounded body. Only the front of the head is detailed: a round eye with a pupil formed by two incised lines and a small triangular beak set off from the face by a groove. To the right of the birds is a lotus and palmette in low relief accentuated by incision. The palmette, at the top, has seven leaves which spring from the semi circle which joins the two volutes of the lotus together. Three lines in the center accentuate the place from which the two leaves of the volute sping. The back of the lotus and palmette is summarily treated by incision. There was probably another bird to the right the lotus and palmette. Traces remain of a ridge halfway up the back. This ridge joins a cross ridge which curves backward, probably for attachment to a vase. The back of the human figure is smooth and continues straight down. |
