Description | Thin bone disc has smooth straight curved edge of varying thickness, and back which was flat originally, and roughly smoothed - note central tool marks, thin lines that run in two perpendicular directions. Front surface is smoother, and worked in a very low relief with incised design of a pointed sunburst or flower-like pattern: inscribed within a thin incision approximately 0.002 m from and parallel to the edge of piece is the pattern of tear-shaped segments, the tips of which all touch the circle. While 16 "petal" ends are visible, the upper, rounded section of eight parts is not cut, but apparently "covered" by the upper layer of tear shapes to create a staggered design; all appear to radiate from an asymmetrical central circle composed of two incised roughly parallel circles. Carving is slightly irregular, with extra, short curved line beside circle and with the asymmetrical overlap of some petals and not others. Tool marks are also visible but not so clear on this surface. |
