Description | Impasto double handle, fragmentary, in two sections joined at the top, where there is a round attachment scar, presumably for a knob. The curving section has straight edges and shows a molded panel decoration consisting of five palmettes and the remnants of a sixth, framed in heart-shaped volutes in a vertical row bordered on the lateral sides by two ridges. The non-curving section (interior of the handle) preserves the upper body of a woman, viewed frontally. The face, in higher relief than the body, is broken just above the eyes. It consists of large eyes, a broad, flat nose, thick lips, and a distinct, projecting chin. The cheeks are framed by long tresses, slashed with short diagonal incisions, which drape down over the chest. Outside the tresses are the remnants of wings. |
