July 12th, 2024 AM: We started by pickpassing starting from the N two meters of locus 4, the picked two meters east. We avoided the 3 meters toward the E since a large concentration of ceramics is in situ in that area, so we preferred to avoid the greater area for now until we are able to visualize the extent of it. We are removing and hand scooping the soil, encountering 2-7 tile fragments and some well preserved (about 3cm) pottery fragments. The soil is a bit powdery with some dense clumps. We have been removing and sorting the soil, finds have remained consistent. At the same time we have been working to lower elevation in the NE meter of the locus using trowels and brushes to define the materials that make up the concentration in this space, we have encountered carbonized materials. In the NE corner we excavated a pithos fragment. It could possibly be a fragment of the same vessel as the exposed base. Pickpass ran in the NW corner lots of rocks starting to be exposed as we clean it up. Finds consistent. ≈7 pottery sherds found approx. 1m south of NE corner. A significant concentration of bases along the eastern edge of the locus along with a smaller centration of rims both of varying fabrics and sizes. We are nearing having locus 4’s elevation match locus 2. While excavating in the NW meter of the locus we have uncovered a collection of tile beginning half a meter from both the N and E edges and extending roughly a meter W. We are currently working on excavating towards the N edge to gain insight as to how far this concentration extends. As we were excavating just S of the N balk wall, roughly 40 cm from the E edge we found shards of orange glass. SF7 • Sf-t108-2024-4-7 • 6 amber fragments 5 associated glass fragments • 220.15 E/33.17 S • Locus 4 • 27.92m AE PM: We continue defining the concentration of terracotta and large stones present along the N wall extending almost two meters south. Fragments vary from about 2 to 10 cm in size. The loose soil is dry, powdery and crumbles apart, while the soil below is the same claylike soil with green undertones. The elevation of locus 4 has reached that of locus two throughout the trench except for the 2 by 2 meter square in the NW. This space has an elevation about 5cm above the remainder of the trench. Closing Elevations: 1. 27.97m AE 2. 28.01m AE 3. 27.94m AE 4. 27.96m AE 5. 28m AE 6. 27.97m AE Closing totals: Terracotta: 2 bowls – BF 37 Pottery: 163 – BF38 Bone: 2- BF39
