Conclusion
CA89 was opened with the following goals:
- Discovering if the rock cluster in the Northwestern corner of CA 87 continues through the baulk walls and may be affiliated with a formation
- Searching for other examples of non-elite architecture
- Explore the relationship between non-elite industrial space and the domestic realm to understand production at Poggio Civitate
- Investigate water capture strategies at Poggio Civitate and possibly reveal a 7th century source
In regards to the intentions, excavation in CA89 was mildly successful in achieving these goals. A linear stone feature was identified in CA87 (AJM II) in Locus 4 which was continued into the CA87 extension and into Locus 6 into the Northwestern corner of the trench. Excavation in CA89 demonstrated that there was another continuation of stones from the southeastern corner of the trench. This lead north into what appears to be a deliberately placed linear feature along the 25 South boundary line between 26 and 28 East. Further north, two linear rock features were discovered along the eastern and western boundary of Locus 6. These rock features between CA87 and CA89 could be associated with each other and indicative of non-elite architecture within the area of site. These possible structures could be related to the 2012-2013 domestic spaces and shed-like structure discovered just east of the current trenches location.

Additionally, in the southwestern corner of Locus 8, a tightly packed soil was discovered that could be suggestive of the partial remains floor surface for the structure. Within close proximity and elevation to this floor surface, a concentration of bones and pottery were discovered that could further suggest some type of habitation of the area.
The variants of elevations between the rock features of CA87 and CA89 as well as the unusual angles which the rock features converge could indicate two possible periods of occupation as well as the recycling of architectural material between the phases. Most of the material was not datable, void of the bifurcated handle fragment which could be dated to the 7th century, however, it is not enough material to definitively date the possible non-elite structure.
Unfortunately, the 2017 excavation of the area did not further expand our understanding of water capture strategies nor reveal a new water source. No pipping, wells, drainage systems, or cisterns were discovered.
As a result of the indeterminable status of the area from this past season, further excavation will be necessary to better understand the rock features and the type of purpose the possible structure(s?) may have served. It would useful to better extend an area north of the current trench as well as to the south, however, there is not enough time in the current season to explore past the current baulk walls of CA87 and CA89.
