Trench Summary

CA42N was opened this season in order to investigate area north of the well discovered in CA42 in 1997 and north west of the stone formations (CA41, CA36).  During the course of the excavation a new stone formation was uncovered in N12-14 W9, different in its appearance from previously excavated formations but nonetheless similar to them in terms of structure and amterial recovered which included large quantitiesd of bone, coil made pottery, bronze and iron objects, and weaving implements.

It appears that a pit was dug into the sterile soil reaching bedrock at the bottom and then filled with material which was present in the olive brown carbon containing soil.

The lense was approximately 2x1.5m, extending north to south.  As the pit was filled stones were placed on top in an elongated lozenge pattern, also oriented north to south.  The nature of this feature is unclear at this point and further investigation of the area is necessary (For info on other stone formations on the site see JBIV 1991, 1993, AMCVI )
