Cut 2

Strip Gamma- A 0.005 m cut was initiated to clarify the stones in the area.

In E4 at 0 measurements were taken to a newly found hard burnt layer with some small stone resting above a yellow permeable-brown mixed soil.

at o- 0.315 below Stratum B

at x- 0.27 m below.

This layer is labelled C1 and blends without definition into the area below it.  No finds came this area (grids DE/4).

Stratum D is a dark brown tufa soil resting directly above the bedrock with no finds. Few finds in this area. A few pieces of buccheroid, a handle, a large mouthed pat rim, 17 tile fragments.

The stones were defined as a possible wall or platform- they seem to continue into grids DE-12.  Possibly it is the corner of a N wall.  Bedrock is continually rising in grids DE 4 to the north.

Cut 1

Strip Zeta- Stratum D- (cont)  Discovered Stratum D: measurements of D below Stratum B:  at o- 0.24 m

at x- 0.27 m

Intrudes 0.45 m East at F and drops suddenly 0.20 m west a while covering above it.  Stratum D then recedes continually into the NS profile of Cut 1 at Grid 4.

at F.5- 0.34 m

at G- 0.26 m

at G.5- 0 at 4 even.

D was left intact to be excavated only when grids GI-56 have been brought down to it as well.  Excavation continued in C at a depth of about 1.0 m.  Numerous stones

appeared at this level but were random. Stones cleared in grids I3 seem to form the lower part of a wall- directly in line with the stones of the wall in Cut 2.  0.15 m cut at H 34 defined lower portion of Stratum D. This lowest layer of C is very high in carbon content compared to the rest.   This bottom was cleared and left till all of the room is

excavated to a similar level.

Few finds: 1/3 box of pottery, 1/4 box of tiles. In I4 an impasto piece, in H4 bronze slivers. 1 box of pottery was taken to the magazzino from Stratum C; mostly coarse though not badly abraded.  All utility ware. Some handles. Some buccheroid.

Cut 3

Grids DE-12 started 0.30-0.40 m into Stratum A.
