Cut 3 was conitnued in zeta/36-38, in the darkish topsoil with rocks already described. Hammers and brushes were employed in clearing away the topsoil around the rocks discovered yesterday in zeta/36-38 (on June 10), and epsilon-zeta/36 and 37. These stones were found to be widely separated, with natural topsoil underneath, and not a rock packing. Thus, this is not a part of the southern wall.
The trench was expanded 1 meter west into grid 35; the dump material from this area was cleaned down, in grids gamma-delta/35, to a level compatible with that of cut 2 (55 cm below dump soil surface in gamma/35).
In grids zeta/36 slanting east through epsilon/38, the edges of the southern wall were uncovered, resting in natural, dark topsoil, and consisting of serveral large irregularly shaped rocks lying adjacent to each other at a level approximately 60-70cm (cut 3) beneath the surface (see diagram p
). The wall was exposed from grid zeta/36-38 to epsilon/36-38. Cut 3: 1/2 cassetta tile, 1/10 box pottery. Cut 1-2 (grid 35): 1/2 cassetta tile, 1/10 box pottery.
P.M.
Cut 1-2: 1/2 cassetta tile. Cut 3: 1/2 cassetta tile, 1/10 box pottery.
Grids epsilon-zeta/35 were brought down to the cut two level: removing the dump soil to reach the original topsoil level. Little pottery or tile was found.
In cut 3, further cleaning of the south wall was inititiated in delta/37-38, revealing to date a wall consisting of large rocks, all totalling an uncovered width of 1.2 meters. The wall lies 55-60cm below dump soil in epsilon-zeta/36-38, and 65-70cm below dump soil in delta/37-38. It lies 10cm beneath the original topsoil floor of the trench.
