Daily Logs 29/7/13

29/7/13

AM

The trench is finally dry enough to continue excavation. A pick pass was done in the western half of the trench. Although the rain had obscured the first few centimeters of the soil, it became immediately apparent that the yellow-mottled soil is present in the center of locus 12 (67-68 E). Soil was sorted by hand and 1 in 3 buckets will be sieved. Less pottery and bone being found in this pick pass than the ones done on Wednesday. A few fragments of tile and plaster were recovered, along with some carbon. A rocchetto fragment was found (SF #1) and a fragment of burnt bone (SF #2). A 2 nd pick pass was done in the northwestern corner. Pottery and bone was recovered. To help the artist who are illustrating the excavation, locus 6 was defined more to expose the rocks in that locus.

Another pick pass was done in the northwestern corner. The soil is almost level with locus 6 now, however the soil had not changed but it is still on olive/yellow-brown soil with lots of carbon and artifacts. Looking at the soil in CA 82's locus 10, it seems to be the same type however it is lower than our current locus, it seems that our loci are a part of cutting between CA 82's Locus 9 and of CA 78's locus 6 . We will continue to excavate to fully understand the stratigraphy of the trench. While cleaning the soil 2 pieces of vitrified terra cotta (SF #3), the 2 nd piece will be counted in bulk vitrified.

Another pick pass was done in the northwestern corner of locus 12 . Soil was sorted, dumped and sieved. While cleaning a fragment of ridged pottery was found (SF #4). The soil is still moist from the rain and slightly mottled with bits of decayed limestone. Another pick pass was done, we are now clearly below the level of locus 6 and the fragments of pottery are coming up larger and less worn. It seems that we are about to start excavating into a cut. We will scrape the floor level to see if we can understand the soil changes here.

While cleaning a piece of fine impasto rim fragment was found (SF #5), a fragment of crucible (SF #6), and ridged buccheroid (SF #7) were also found. The baulk walls were trimmed, the floor scraped and the stumps defined.
