In grids alpha-beta/38, a 10cm cut (cut 4) was begun, and proceeded west across grids 35-37. The soil is still evidently topsoil; darkish, with little tile and pottery. Total trench depth is now 30cm below topsoil.

In the test trench (gamma-epsilon/44-45) cut 2 was commenced north of the eroded remnants of the southern wall, in grids delta-gamma/44-45, save in gamma/45, where a tree stump impedes excavation. The cut was 20cm below the top of the wall, 50cm below topsoil in the delta grid, and 60cm below topsoil in the gamma quadrants. Upon further examination, the soil north of the wall is of a much browner hue than that found elsewhere at this level in the 1982 extensions. This is probably due to a disturbance of the organic material by erosion. This postulation is supported by the poor preservation of the wall in this area, plus a much larger presence of tiles (all scattered, lying 20cm below the wall top) than recorded north of the wall in other area. 1 cas. tile, mostly pan tiles; 1/2 box pottery.

Pottery content was varied, ranging from several impasto to a few bucchero sherds.

A similar cuto f 20cm below the wall to its south, in grids epsilon/44-45 produced little tile, in contrast

to the north, though the soil remained unchanged. A few fragmentary impasto sherds were uncovered in this grid, as well. The lack of tile south of the wall, with an unchanged soil texture points to the wall remnants as perhaps acting as s "stoppage" in preventing artifacts from being washed down the south slope of the site.

In cut 4, in grids alpha-beta/35, pottery quantity increased, in contrast to the quadrants previously excavated in this cut. About 1/2 box of gray and orangeware sherds were found lying in close conjunction, in alpha/35. In beta/35, two completes impasto bases, as well as several body pieces that may join )2 pottery boxes).  1/3 cas. tile, 3 pottery boxes.

Test trench: 1 1/2 cast tile, 1/2 box pottery.

P.M.

Test trench (gamma-epsilon/44-45): After removing the tree stumps in gamma/45, part of what may prove to be a tile fall or layer was discovered underneath, at a depth of about 50cm below topsoil, and 20cm below stone south wall remnant. The pan and cover tiles lie atop each other, apparently going into the east baulk, and (as of the moment) covering a meter area in gamma/45. The tiles are found in the same brownish soil found elsewhere in cut 2 in the trench. No pottery, 1 cas. tile.

In grids alpha-beta/37-38, cut 5(25 cm below trench floor, 40cm below topsoil) produced little or no pottery, and 172 cas. tile, from yellowish, clay-like soil with shale particles. This type of soil is a continuation of the same stratigraphic level surrounding either side of the south wall, with the same lack of finds.

No recordable finds.
