Because of rain, the area of black earth was too wet for excavation in the morning. Instead, excavation was expanded to the west as far as the mound thrown up by the steam shovel (grid numbers G-H, 1-4). Five boxes of tiles were dumped from this area. this extension included only the yellowish earth and produced material like that noted the previous day: wall plaster, pottery, and tiles.

A cut was made through the trench in squares D-H, 3 to see what the relation was between the yellowish earth containing the tiles and the black earth which contained no tiles. The two areas were completely seperate with the yellowish layer surrounding the black and in parts overlaying it.

The large mass of stones mentioned in the previous day was removed and excavation under them began. Between the stones was found one tile fragment

in conjunction with a few pieces of black pottery. The stones rested in the area of black earth and sat on top of it. the earth underneath the stones yielded pottery of the same type as that found elsewhere in the black earth area. After removal of the stones, the cut mentioned above was continued in grid squares B-C, 3.
