The trench was taken down to a max depth of 40cm. The stones and the bedrock were cleaned. The features are: column-base "A", a similar base at a distance (center to center) of a little less than 3m to the N,; a formation of bedrock at the N end with a spur sticking out at grid OP 28.
One box of tiles was dumped - the material was largely collected the day before.
3 boxes were sent down to Murlo: one with bones; one with sherds, and one with an almost complete base (in 6 pieces) of a jar, some ries, and 2 pieces from a cooking-stand.
In order to define the bedrock in the N and E part of the trench a new cut was made to the E, measuring 5m. W-E and 5.50m N-S, see plan, p. 236 . A very thin layer had been taken off in 1969 when the trench was partially excavated. The present "topsoil" therefore consisted of a very thin layer of humus and small stones. This layer was taken off, and it became clear that the whole trench, except the SW corner, consisted of a strip of bedrock, broken up into an uneven surface. The spur noticed in grid OP 28 forms part of a circle round gap in the bedrock, with a or somewhat oval (see not on "bedrock" p. 242 )
Diameter of ca 1m. It has small opening towards column base alpha. Nothing except earth, was found in this whole.
1/2 box of tiles was collected.
