Locus 1 is dark, nearly black, moist soil. It is full of organic material such as roots. There are scattered rocks on the surface ranging in size from 3 cm to 45 cm in length. There are two visible pieces of tile. Three large stumps are located within the trench. Work was done with trowels to lower the areas around the stumps. Some badly worn and small tile fragments were found near stump C. Loose surface rocks and visible tile were removed. Hand picks lowered the ground along the northern baulk. Found modern scissors. Beneath the topsoil is a lighter, medium brown soil that is noticeably denser and clay like. A pick was used to lower the ground between the stumps. This yielded several pieces of tile and 1 piece of pottery. In the south eastern area of the trench there is a concentration of organic material and a great dead of root rot. Many ricks are being uncovered in the space around the stumps, approx. 7-10 cm in length.
