Introduction

The excavation of T-27 in 1989 will continue the goals established for the trench during the 1985 and 1989 seasons. These goals can be summarized as follows:

To attempt to locate a kiln or kilns belonging to the southeast building phase thereby further characterizing the area as a workshop.

To continuecver all artifacts associated with the southeast building, particularly architectural terracottas which may have adorned the building's south flank.

To continue to recover all artifacts associated with the site in general in order to further our understanding of the pattern of the destruction of the site.

4. To further define the ancient stratigraphy of the south slope including:

a. identification of the ancient ground line.

b. the possible discovery of a defensive moat on the south slope similar to those found to the north and west.

c. to identify any continuation (or destruction debris) of the defensive wall found in T-25.

d. to identify any possible ancient dump sites.

Excavation of T-27 in 1988 proved successful in both the priliminary identification of ancient ground line (see section by G. SODENBERG T-27 1988) and the limited recovery along the south slope of material associated with both the southeast and upper buildings. Notalbe was also the discovery in meters F-H/68-70 of

A dense rock pack of as yet indeterminate character.

It is hoped that the continued excavation of T-27 in 1989 will reveal the nature of this rock pack as well as bring us further toward the obtainment of the other goals for the trench outlined above.

Note: all depth measuments will be taken in centimenters from the existing ground line.
