Munsell: 2.5Y 4/3 olive brown
Description: Locus 50 consisted of a soil deposit situated in the northwestern quadrant of the trench. The soil of Locus 50 was olive brown in color, claylike in texture, and was moderately compacted. The deposit was excavated using hand picks and trowels, soil was hand-sorted in the trench, then passed through 1cm and 2mm gauge sieves.
Locus 50 underlay Locus 49. Once the soil deposit of Locus 49 was removed and Locus 50 revealed, the westernmost of the two southwardly-projecting soil packages (see Locus 49) was revealed to contain three large limestone rocks (maximum dimension of 50cm). The soil of Locus 50 filled the gaps between these rocks, but the rocks were not situated within the locus; instead, they seem to be embedded in a lower deposit and simply projected upward into Locus 50.
Locus 50 yielded moderately high quantities of material culture, including 269 sherds of pottery and 97 bone fragments; additionally, we recovered modest quantities of tile, plaster, slag, and vitrified terracotta. Notably, we recovered a fenestrated vessel fragment that likely is a piece of a colander used for cheese production (PC20230081), two coarseware vessel fragments with interior projecting elements (PC20230091, PC20230092), and fragments of a fine impasto plate (PC20230109).
Locus 50 was identified as the exterior surface of the small, rectilinear hut built atop the ruins of EPOC4; it was situated to the north of the northern foundation wall of this hut (Locus 2, excavated in 2017). Locus 50 underlay Locus 49 and overlay Locus 52. It is equivalent to Loci 4 and 5, both excavated in 2017, and to Locus 44, the southern exterior surface of this hut, excavated this season.
