Section of cover tile?  Length 11 cm.  Tile fgmts "increasing" in number to the E.  pan tile fgmt. max. dim 20 x 11 cm.  Yellow soil--chunky--increasing.

70 cm--heavy yellowish soil.  Few sherds and tile fgmts.--increasing from 2 m. stake to the E.

F2 d. 85 cm--Rim, purple and black paint.

F2 d. 90 cm--Loom weight

F1 d. 85 cm--Between rocks--almost complete imposto base.  Fired black.

F2 fgmt. of "lid" with handle attachment.

Total:  1/4 box of tiles.

This section was taken down to a max. depth of 1.10-1.20 m.  The bottom of the trench was defined by layer rocks, presumably bedrock.  In F2 the rocks form a wall-looking line going across the trench.  Max. width:  50-60 cm.

When the E edge of the cut was completely cleaned it became apparent that there is no layer of stones below the "lower" wall, but that the strata noticed in the rest of the trench continue here:  stone fill--darker soil mixed with carbon--yellow soil--brownish black soil.  The soil was tested under the lower wall--going in ca. 30 cm. but no stones appeared.

Thus it remains to be seen if the Eastern wall defining this trench and forming the E wall of this flank of the Santuario is built with the same deep foundations as its W. counterpart.
