in the west end of the trench, to 2.0 m from the end, the stratum changed at 0.45 m. At this depth, [in a small rectangular aread bordered by the saouth wall of the trench, and the rough stone "wall" 2.0 m from the west end, extending about 0.5 m square] a deposit of red clay was found, about 10 cm thick. It was in this area that much of the bucchero

was found.

In the western end of the trench pottery and tile fragments were found as far down as 0.6 m, including some bucchero.

In the eastern end of the trench, dark soil continued to 0.6 m, with many fragments of pottery, tile, and bone. In this area, at a depth of 0.5 m, a piece of decorated bucchero hande was found*.

A photograph was taken at the end of the say, to show more stone exposed during the day s excavation.
