This morning the area around the column base in KL/92-93 was worked at down to floor level (ca. 55-60cm). A heavy brun layer composed of both black and red soil was found to surround the base. The red soil was especially heavy in K/93 moving toward the tile concentration in K/94. A sample of the red burn soil was removed for analysis. In addition, a small concenration of both tile and pottery, perhaps connected with the much larger tile concentration found in K/94, was uncovered toward the southeast of the column base in K/93.

This small tile concentration was surrounded by black, burn soil and yello, disintegreated plaster. One casseta of mixed tile and plaster (60% tile, 40% plaster), including several pieces of blackened tile, was removed from around the column base.

One quarter of a box of pottery of mixed fabric, including a finely preserved redware base ( ) was discovered. MOst of the pottery was burned. Also, several pieces of charred bone and a small chip of bronze were also

discovered in the black-burn soil.

The area around the colum base in N/O 93/94 was also cleared down in order to better define the extent of the base. The soil around the colum base contained a large amount of plaster and some small rocks. In addition, a large stump located on the southern flank of the base prevented the exposure of the base's southern side. The base itself was found to be in poor condition, greatly damaged by the roots of the stump above it. No material was recovered from around the column base.

The stumps resting above the floor in N/89 was cleaned down and removed. The soil beneath the stump was composed of yellow plaster (60% tile, 40% plaster) was removed from beneath the stump. In addition, one-half box of burned bucchero fragmets was also discovered.

The cut in KL/95 was taken down

to a depth of ca. 45-50cm. The soil in teh cut was grey-brown in color and contained a large amount of rock, especially shale. One-half cassetta of mixed tile and plaster (80% tile, 20% plaster) in worn condition, was removed from the cut. No other material was recovered. In J/93-95, the cut was taken down to a depth of ca. 65-0cm.

Three layers of soil were encountered in the cut. The first layer. extending to a depth of ca. 55-60cm, was grey-brown in color and contained a large amount of rock. No tile or pottery was recovered from the grey-brown soil.

The second layer encountered, extending to a depth of ca. 60-65cm was dark brown in color and contained a large amount of small rocks. One cassetta of mixed tile and plaster (80% tile, 20% plaster) was removed from the dark brown soil. A few fragments of worn pottery were also discovered in this layer. The third soil layer encountered, extending to a depth of ca. 65-70cm, was a burn consisting of both black

and red burn soil. One-half a cassetta of unburned tile was removed from the burn soil. In addition, a dense layer of rock, possibly a column base, was uncovered at the base of the cut in J/95. Most of the tile recovered from the cut was discovered near the eastern end of the tile concentration in J/91-93.

However, the tile found today does not seem to be linked to this concentration. Thus, it can be assumed that the tile concentration in J/91-93 forms its eastern boundary in meter J/93.
