Rectangle 5
Today work was continued in Rectangle 5 ( see EN III ) with the purpose of cleaning the supposed NE angle of the northern unit of the lower building, the northern wall of which (running E-W) was partly excavated in 1971 in Rectangle 6 ( IE II ) and partly in 1972 ( EN III ) and whose eastern wall seems to run N-S through so-called courtyard grids.
The trench was measured out to comprise grids F-J/K 0-3 using the pre-existing grid system. We leave a profile about 50 cm wide towards feet F-K/4-6 already excavated and about the same space north of the crosswall of the upper building between
R6 and R7. Also, we leave a N-S strip 1 m wide (T-K/0 next to the courtyard wall of the upper building in Rect. 6 to get a good cut for a profile N-S seen from the east through the pavement which is preserved here next to the upper wall.
Work started in grids R5 J/3-2 from the east, going down slowly about 10-15 cm through a rather dry compact yellowish gray soil which did not contain much: no stones, almost no carbon, a few small tile fragments, a few sherds including small pieces of bucchero, some few pieces of bones, some burnt, no ivory. The work proceeded slowly and all the soil was sifted.
Working westwards on the border between J/2 and 1, the soil changed character and
color remarkably, getting burned red. What is probably part of a burnt mattone crudo with at least two smooth surfaces turned up right here, in a position that might possibly indicate the outer face of a mud wall. This might possibly correspond to a burnt reddish layer with a cleraly visible vertical ending colored yellow (wall face of clay plaster?) in the south profile of the E-W crosswall of the upper building between Rect. 6 and 7, but it is far from sure that the red burnt stratas belong to the same feature.
Today's only finds werei n J/2 in a rather high level, just ab. 5 cm below the ground where we started, ab. corresponding to the present upper surface of crosswall R6/R7.
(Seems that we are still not down to the \'lower level.\')
At the end of the work day in grid J/2, we struck upon a burnt layer, reddish-yellowish in color with black patches of charcoal, quite different from the soil above. We continued tracing that over grids J/2-3.
Plans: to work down to same level in I/2-3 before going westwards. This burnt layer seems to be the same as the one visible in the western profile of the Rect. 5 trench dug by EN ( see EN III ).
